Second-hand buying

What to Check Before Buying Used Items from China

A practical checklist for condition, accessories, seller questions, inspection scope and packaging before you approve a second-hand purchase.

Identify the exact item

Start with the model, version, edition or other identifier that matters to you. Save the listing and relevant screenshots. Similar-looking items can differ in compatibility, accessories or included parts.

If a serial marking, label or distinctive detail is necessary to identify the item, ask whether a clear photo can be provided. A photo can document a marking; it does not by itself establish authenticity or ownership history.

Describe condition with observable details

Rather than relying only on a broad term such as “good,” ask about the defects that would affect your decision. Depending on the item, that might include scratches, cracks, stains, corrosion, loose parts, repairs or modifications.

Tell us what you would consider unacceptable. A seller can answer a focused question more clearly than a general request for reassurance. Keep in mind that an answer is still the seller’s statement and that some defects may be hidden.

List the accessories you expect

Check the listing against a written list of included parts. Consider cables, chargers, adapters, straps, detachable components, manuals and packaging where relevant. Do not infer inclusion merely because an accessory appears in one photograph.

If an accessory is essential, make it a condition to be confirmed before purchasing. Buying a replacement later can change the overall cost or leave the item unusable for your intended purpose.

Check the buying fee and service scope

For a single-platform Xianyu order, Merqelio Buy charges a fixed US$5 when the order’s product subtotal is up to CNY 300; above CNY 300, the fee is 10% of the entire product subtotal. Only one fee applies. The fixed fee is billed separately in USD, without automatic conversion. Domestic shipping, international shipping and taxes are excluded from the fee base. Orders priced in currencies other than CNY need an individual quote to establish the applicable threshold without an assumed exchange rate. Mixed-platform requests receive a manually confirmed fee. Review the published schedule and any separately agreed inspection work before proceeding.

Define what a functional check would need to show

A powered item may require more than a photo of an illuminated screen. Specify the function you need confirmed and ask whether a suitable check is available. Technical or specialist testing needs a separately agreed scope and suitable expertise.

Photo inspection cannot predict future performance, establish battery health in every case or reveal all internal repairs. If uncertainty would make the purchase unacceptable, do not treat a basic visual check as a substitute for that missing information.

Review the seller’s return conditions

Ask about the available return or cancellation options before you approve the purchase. Do not assume that a used item has the same return conditions as a new item or that a cross-border return will be straightforward.

The purchase stage, seller response, domestic delivery and any completed service work can affect the available next step. The individual quote and applicable policy should make relevant conditions clear before funds are accepted.

Decide what should be inspected after arrival

Give a short checklist for the receiving stage:

  • Confirm the expected item and quantity.
  • Photograph the specific condition areas you identified.
  • Show the agreed accessories together.
  • Note visible damage to the item or its packaging.
  • Preserve seals and original packaging unless opening or removal was agreed.

If a concern is found, discuss it before the item is consolidated or sent internationally. Keeping clear photos and the inquiry reference helps organize the review.

Plan the parcel too

Fragile or collector’s items may need protection beyond a seller’s domestic packaging. A retail box may have value, while batteries or other contents may affect the available route. Include those details early.

Free warehouse storage is available for 30 days. The start date and any extended-storage fees are confirmed in your quote before storage is extended.

There is no universal checklist that removes all risk from used buying. The useful outcome is a clear record of what you asked, what was confirmed, what was checked and what uncertainty remains when you decide whether to proceed.
